Why you should regularly request your SCHUFA information

SCHUFA? - I am not interested!

Many people say to themselves: "What do I care about my SCHUFA information?". How important this data is often only becomes apparent when you have a problem with it. For example, when a cell phone contract is rejected or the bank does not want to grant an overdraft.

Or if you get a credit report from SCHUFA for a new apartment and it doesn't look good at all. Then you can save yourself the appointment to view the dream apartment at this point. Quite a few people, especially in metropolitan areas, are therefore dependent on finding accommodation with friends or family.

Knowledge is power - request information!

The first rule that applies to almost everything is: "Knowledge is power". Only if you know what entries are contained in your SCHUFA report can you strategically plan your next steps. For most people, SCHUFA is not a problem at all; on the contrary, it helps to prove one's creditworthiness to potential landlords, for example.

For this purpose, there are special products available for purchase directly from SCHUFA, which are beautifully designed and show the new landlord that he can have confidence in you. This will give you a head start over all the applicants who have failed to pay in the past. We therefore recommend that you have a credit report from SCHUFA in your pocket for an upcoming apartment inspection. However, only if it looks good. But what to do if it does not look good and there are unattractive entries? For this purpose, there is the information according to Article 15 DSGVO. This contains in detail all the data stored at SCHUFA.

If one or the other negative Schufa entry is contained there, there is also a golden rule here: pay! Although there are deletion periods until a paid claim is finally erased from the SCHUFA data, often a settlement note is already a step in the right direction. In one of our next articles, we will show you how you can delete such settled claims from your SCHUFA information.

Benefit for consumers: SCHUFA information thanks to DSGVO

With the introduction of the GDPR, the situation has improved for consumers.

While until some time ago it was assumed that the overview of SCHUFA data was to be provided free of charge once a year, it is now assumed that SCHUFA is obliged to do so at "reasonable intervals". What is reasonable is of course a matter of interpretation, and requesting this data monthly is certainly excessive and also not reasonable.

However, asking SCHUFA for information on a quarterly basis seems reasonable and plausible. After all, almost all financial service providers such as banks and insurance companies are contractually linked to SCHUFA and report, for example, loans or account openings to SCHUFA. This means that the data stored at SCHUFA changes relatively frequently.

It's best to make a note of it in your calendar and request an up-to-date data extract at regular intervals. To do this, you have the option of choosing the convenient route via selbstauskunft.de for a small fee, or you can search for the not-so-easy-to-find form on the SCHUFA website, print it out, copy your ID card and send it to SCHUFA by mail. We recommend our service here - but it's also possible at any time for free if you don't mind the paperwork.
